Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model (LNSGM)
During 2001 the community at Loreto Normanhurst worked to develop a future direction that saw us examine our very rich Loreto and Catholic tradition to see what challenges they have for us and our school community. From this examination and community collaboration our intent was born of .. growing individuals and communities...
At Loreto Normanhurst we strive to provide a holistic education that
assists our students to be young women who will be passionate about
learning, compassionate to others and have a strong sense of social
direction, with relationships at it s centre, will mean many challenges
for Loreto Normanhurst which leads us to continue to strive for
authentic and challenging education for our students.
January 2004 marked the exciting realisation of Loreto Normanhurst's new direction, the Loreto Normanhurst Student Growth Model. At the centre of this new direction is .. growing individuals and communities.. where relationships and learning are central. Our 2004 cohort of Year 7 students were housed in a new learning space, the Deirdre Rofe Centre, which is equipped for the innovative pedagogies that were developed by the staff. Year 7 students were taught by a group of teachers called the year 7 Team. Now all students work in partnership with teachers and faculties and together provide new and original student centred learning where a Student Growth Plan is continually being further developed. Year 9 students are involved in a two week "Outreach" experience which takes place in Far North Queensland. During the two weeks the girls perform Community Service, interact with indigenous communities, undertake curriculum based excursion actives and are challenged to step out of their comfort zone.
All students have an advisor who cares for them each day in a holistic way. The student, together with the advisor and the parents, develop the Student Growth Plan. This new method of teaching and learning looks at all elements of the person, their faith, academic, community and extra-curricular development. Examining this and looking for cross curricular connections makes for some very exciting learning which will better outfit our students for life in the twenty-first century.
Student/Advisor Conversations
The Student/Advisor Conversation provides an opportunity for Advisors to connect with students in their care, building a critical learning relationship which assists the student in developing an understanding and ability to articulate her learning.
The Student/Advisor conversation takes place three times per term and is 15 minutes in duration.
Student/Advisor conversations are designed to provide a forum for students to:
- Practice and understand the ‘Language of Growth’
- Reflect on their learning across all of the FACE dimensions and all aspects of the curriculum
- Be challenged by their Advisor to achieve the best standard of which they are capable across all areas
- Discuss the challenges and dilemmas they face in their learning
