LOTE (Languages Other than English)

French / Italian

The Language programs in French and Italian at Loreto Normanhurst are designed to provide opportunities for students to become more accepting of diversity, more respectful of others and more aware of their place in the international community.
Classes are focused on developing the 4 language communication skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. As well, students develop knowledge of the culture of French and Italian speaking communities and an understanding of the interdependence of language and culture.

Students develop their language skills in a dynamic environment where they are able to practise the language and deepen their knowledge by using a variety of resources: computer software programs, student magazines, participation in national and internal school competitions and Alliance Française tests, extra conversation practice with native speaker university students, films and songs.

In Year 7, students study a term of each language. One language is then selected for compulsory study (mandated by the government) until the end of year 8. Students can then elect to continue or discontinue their foreign language study.

Beginners courses are offered to students who wish to start a new language study in Year 11, Continuers courses in Years 11 and 12 are offered to students who have studied the language in Years 9 and 10, and Extension courses are offered to talented Year 12 Continuers students.

Overseas exchange programs are available for students who have completed Year 11 language study.
