Mathematics

The Mathematics programs at Loreto Normanhurst are designed to foster in our students a love of learning and an appreciation of the value of mathematics in their lives. Students are encouraged to make links between known strategies and new strategies, and make logical connections between new information and previously acquired knowledge. Problem solving skills and a willingness to embrace challenges are highly regarded.

Teachers of Mathematics at Loreto Normanhurst adopt a hands-on, problem-solving approach where students are expected and encouraged to talk to each other and the teacher about their mathematical thinking. Classes or groups of students progress along the continuum of mathematical learning at a pace that is conducive to rich and sustained learning. We encourage students to work at the speed and level that challenges them appropriately.

Students who require additional help with their mathematics make use of Maths Clinic, which operates once a week at lunchtime. Several Mathematics teachers are available to help students with any problems. Students with a flair for Mathematics are encouraged to participate in a range of enrichment activities.

In Years 11 and 12 students select the Stage 6 Mathematics course that best suits their ability and needs. The choices of 2-Unit courses available are General Mathematics and Mathematics. More able students may do an additional unit of mathematics in Year 11 by choosing the Extension 1 course, and the Extension 2 course is available to the most able mathematicians in Year 12.
