Loreto Home

Aston

astonAston Lodge was built in 1865 by John Watkins. It was designed by Edmund Blacket. It is now part of the Emanuel School in Stanley Street, Randwick. The name ASTON comes from the man who built it, John Watkins. Aston was the name of his wife's mother. Caitlin Murray (Year 7 1998) a member of this house, is related to the Watkin's family.

Aston Lodge became the first Loreto school in Sydney in 1892. At this time a community of Loreto nuns from Ballarat came to Sydney under the leadership of Mother Mary Dorothea Frizelle to establish a boarding and day school for girls. In 1897 the boarding school was transferred to Normanhurst.
