Social Justice
The Loreto Normanhurst Mission Statement describes a Loreto community as one which ‘celebrates a joyous Christian faith which grows from reflection and leads to justice’.
Our students are guided into appreciating that the concerns and endeavours of awareness-raising and action are integral to Christianity.
The Loreto Normanhurst Social Justice program aims to develop in our students, the ability to:
- reflect on society and structures in our world;
- understand the difference between justice and charity;
- discern the needs of others and the ways in which structures and practices may embody that which is sinful, that which is less than life-giving for all; and
- take action.
These aims may be achieved through awareness-raising, practical assistance through fundraising or through active involvement with communities.
All processes and involvement begin with prayer and are celebrated liturgically. This may be in the form of a whole school Eucharist such as that celebrated on Loreto Day or in the more intimate setting of weekday Communion Services and celebrations of the Eucharist.
Developing awareness of social justice issues is a feature of the:
- Religious Education curriculum;
- Pastoral curriculum;
- Community Service program - both in the Year 9 Outreach experience and the Yr 10 and 11 community service commitment.
All activities and involvement are undertaken in a spirit of deep respect for the dignity of the people they meet and with the intention of walking beside them. The program also provides opportunities for awareness of the needs of communities in the wider world.
In these endeavours, we work as part of Mary Ward International and connect with members of the IBVM who are working in situations of need in several countries. The Loreto value which is explored and celebrated each year is integral to the ongoing understanding and response to social justice in our communities and the world.
