Information from Mr Kachel Director of ICT
The internet has a maze of website that students are exploring in
many ways and both Federal and the NSW Governments have provided
resources on the safe use of the Internet. There is a consistent
message between the two government organisations about awareness by
parents and communication between parents and their children about
their Internet use and potential issues.
The Click magazine has some great information from the NSW DET and
was sent to all public school students in the last fortnight.
to view the website and please download and read the 2.5MB Click
magazine which has a range of information that is extremely
informative.
Similarly the Federal Government website
Net Advice
has a range of issues and pages that you and or your child
can go to and learn from.
In a time where connectedness is all important to teenagers an
awareness of potential issues needs to be raised in the home and
school. This site provides a wealth of information, especially this
quick guide for
Internet Safety
from the Click website, as well the site
Wise up to IT
(Australian Communication and Media Authority) which has some great
videos that target teenagers with case studies and strategies to
deal with technology issues such as Bullying and Stalking.
I can recommend that
discussion points between parents and students could include:
- Covering issues on the Internet such as privacy, identity theft,
cyber bullying, cyber stalking, virus, email phishing/scams,
offensive content, use of camera's to post pictures and video online….
- What are your privacy settings in Facebook and or Myspace?
- Have you posted video to Youtube? If so what?
- Do you communicate with people you don’t know? How much do you/
should you talk to them?
- How do you communicate with people you do know, what is appropriate
and what is clearly inappropriate to say either in a chat, email or
Facebook wall (or face to face!).
- Do you understand your digital footprint?
o
How long will your wall chats last – 1 year or 5 or 10?
o
How long will your pictures exist online?
o
What does your facebook site and discussions say about you.
