Pastoral News

Marysa Boland and Justin Madigan | Deans of Pastoral Care

Welcome Back!

Our School is once again filled with the buzz of student life as we welcome all new and current students back for 2023. Our students have made a positive start to the school year, and we congratulate them on their calm and respectful approach. As we begin, students have been working with their Heads of House to review the guidelines and expectations about behaviour and various school policies to ensure respectful and safe behaviour. These conversations and reminders will be ongoing throughout the year. We draw your attention to the Student Handbook for essential information, especially pages 14-18 for information on behaviour, bullying, harassment and drugs and alcohol, pages 21-23 regarding uniform, pages 26-27 regarding ICT and pages 32-34 on attendance. Please discuss these pages with your daughter and we look forward to your support in these matters. Each student received their Student Handbook this week.

Open Circle Immersion

Year 7 students will enjoy their Open Circle immersion experience next week from Wednesday, 8 February to Friday, 10 February in Tallong. This is a wonderful opportunity and we wish them well.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day is an international event promoting the need for a safe internet environment for all people and this year’s theme is ‘Connect, Reflect, Protect.’ We will be discussing Safer Internet Day and our school ICT policies in our House time next week. We encourage you to discuss your family technology plan around the use of devices at home. One simple and effective strategy is for mobile phones to be switched off in the evening at a designated time and not left in your daughter’s bedroom. A valuable resource for families is The Office of the eSafety Commissioner. Please click here for their eSafety Education 2023 Parent/Carer Webinar schedule and registering details. We also have our own Loreto Normanhurst Cybersafety Hub for further tips and information.

As we begin a new school year, we look forward to working in partnership with you and your daughters.

Year 10 AAS Testing

Thursday, 9 February 2023

On Thursday, 9 February, Year 10 will complete a series of educational tests in Mathematics, Reading Comprehension, Spelling and Written Expression. The tests will be conducted on behalf of the school by Academic Assessment Services (AAS) and will provide valuable information as to the progress of the students. These results, in conjunction with other results from students’ ongoing assessments, help us to plan more effectively to meet the needs of each student and the year group as a whole. Results will be provided to families when available. Students will need to bring either a blue or black pen, a scientific calculator and a water bottle. Laptops will not be required and students are not required to study for the tests. If a student is absent on the day, a catch up exam has been scheduled on Tuesday, 7 March.

The testing will commence at the start of the school day and students have been requested to assemble in the Top Quad where the roll will be marked. The testing will conclude at 12:30pm, where students will return to normal classes after lunch. If you have any questions, please email the Learning Office.

Study Skills Website

Our school currently subscribes to a study skills website from Dr Prue Salter – Enhanced Learning Educational Services.

This website will help students develop essential skills for academic success. There are units of work on improving time management skills, how to study, research skills, summarising, technology use, brain and memory and much more. Everything students need to know about becoming a powerful learner and improving their marks at school can be found on this site. For example, learn how the colour of the room affects the ability to study, what the best study techniques are for different types of brains, how to improve handwriting and useful software and Apps to block technology distractions.

There are also lots of useful handouts, grids and planners at the bottom of the 'Things to Print' page.

To access the handbook, click here and login with these details:

  • Username: loretonh
  • Password: loretonh

The more of this website you can work through, the more you will set yourself up for academic success.

Sport News

Eliza King (Year 12) has been training with the NSW U18 Women’s Softball team for several months leading up to the National Tournament in Perth, WA. The tournament was held over 5 days, from 7-11 January, during which time NSW played 12 games and were undefeated, giving up just 14 runs in the whole tournament. Eliza batted strongly throughout the tournament and played at left field. In the Grand Final against Western Australia, NSW won 6-0 after 7 innings, with Eliza contributing one of those runs.

The team brought home the Elinor Mackenzie shield which Queensland had held for the last 5 years.
