Celebrating 150 Years of Loreto Through Mary Ward Connect

Earlier this term, Loreto Normanhurst welcomed students from Loreto Ballarat and Loreto Marryatville as part of Mary Ward Connect, a nationwide exchange program that allows students across the Loreto network to experience life at other Loreto schools. This year, the program was particularly special as it coincided with the celebration of 150 years of Loreto in Australia, giving students the opportunity not only to immerse themselves in the academic, cultural, and social life of another Loreto community, but also to reflect on the rich history and enduring sisterhood that connects Loreto girls across the country.

The visiting students were warmly welcomed with afternoon tea and a campus tour, before meeting our Principal, Ms Marina Ugonotti, for an introduction to Loreto Normanhurst’s history. Their first day concluded with a Welcome BBQ, giving students the chance to relax and get to know their host buddies.

Over the following days, the visiting students joined their host buddies in classes, attended whole-school events, and participated in interactive sessions with Primary School students. They also joined our Assembly, experiencing firsthand the energy and spirit of our community, including Spirit Cup celebrations and House achievements. One of the week’s highlights was an online Forum connecting all Loreto schools nationwide, offering a meaningful opportunity to reflect on 150 years of Loreto in Australia and the shared values, heritage, and connections that unite Loreto girls across the country.

Students enjoyed bonding activities, historical tours, and cultural experiences throughout the week. They learned about the rich history of Loreto Normanhurst, including the stories of the sisters buried in the Bush Cemetery, and participated in trivia and discussions that highlighted the traditions of the three schools. Excursions to Sydney landmarks, such as the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, and St Mary’s Cathedral, allowed students to explore the city together and reflect on the broader context of their Loreto education.

Meanwhile, our Loreto Normanhurst students travelled to Ballarat and Marryatville, experiencing life at their host schools. At Ballarat, they joined their buddies for classes, campus tours, and a guided visit to the school archives, connecting with the history and identity of the school. In Marryatville, our students explored Adelaide, visiting the Central Markets, Torrens River, Adelaide Oval, and the South Australia Museum, and shared presentations about life at Loreto Normanhurst. Across all exchanges, students engaged in meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and discovered the unique qualities of each Loreto community.

Mary Ward Connect is a celebration of the enduring sisterhood of Loreto schools. This program enables students to forge friendships, learn from one another, and appreciate both the individuality and interconnectedness of each school. This year’s exchange held special significance as it marked 150 years of Loreto in Australia, highlighting the long-standing tradition, shared values, and nationwide network that have shaped generations of Loreto girls.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in Mary Ward Connect and to continue building connections across our Loreto network. These exchanges foster collaboration, reflection, and enduring bonds that extend far beyond the classroom, ensuring that the spirit of Mary Ward’s vision continues to thrive across Australia.
